This Department, the vertebrae of the entire engineering education process exists right from the inception of the college (2001) and is efficiently supporting the engineering Departments by providing high quality of training in basic sciences.
Headed by the most experienced and highly qualified professor, this Department has English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry under its awning.
Almost all the staff members in this Department are well experienced and working in this reputed institution for many years. In addition, over the years, this is the only Department that has the highest number of Doctorates with specialization in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
During the last academic year, the Department had the utmost satisfaction of producing a pass percentage of 93% and above in individual subjects in the IstYear B.E. / B.Tech, Anna University Examinations.
The goal of the Department is to develop world class leaders for tomorrow’s business environment. Apart from the teaching of Technical English I and II in the first year and Communications Skills Laboratory in the third year to B.E. / B.Tech students as per the curriculum of Anna University of Technology, Chennai, the Department plays a vital role in the all-round development of the students who belong to varied castes, creeds and financial backgrounds. It strives to produce graduates of international repute by imparting communication skills, soft skills and interpersonal skills as well. It also trains students for BEC, Conducted by Cambridge University.
Our College has signed a MOU with the British Council for conducting Business English Certificate Preliminary Examinations for all the first year UG students. Every year considerable number of students appear for all levels of BEC – Preliminary and Vantage. The Department has been felicitated by Cambridge University for promoting the students regularly to take up BEC Preliminary and Vantage courses for the academic year 2011-2012.
Established in 2001, the Language Laboratory of the Department of English has several self-learning packages (Hi class SW ( Multimedia Educational Network system), Manage stress, Manage time, Cambridge Advanced Dictionary, English Pronunciation Dictionary, Issues in English, Globarena English Lab & Career Lab, Face2face Intermediate, Globarena software ( Multimedia Educational Network system), Mindscape, I year and III year( material prepared by staff) ) to hone the communication skills of the learners entrusted to our care. A full-fledged computer-based laboratory, it now has a capacity to accommodate 68 learners at a time.
The internet facility made available enables the students to utilize the resources on the innumerable language-learning websites which in turn widen their knowledge and expand their potential, thus developing their listening, reading and presentation skills, and enlightening their awareness of group discussions required for the Communication Skills Laboratory examination, and the interview skills thereafter.
The Department of Mathematics was started catering to the needs of Engineering Departments and stands focused to its Ideals in imparting knowledge and preparing the students towards achieving academic excellence through the acquisition of core competence mathematics & relevance for engineering professionals. Over the years since inception of the College, the Department has grown in tune with the demands of the Institution and improved its strength. It has faculty strength of 16 members with 1 doctorate and 9 are pursuing doctorates. As of today, the Department handles the Mathematics papers for M.E., M.Tech., M.C.A., M.B.A. in addition to the UG Courses (ECE, EIE, EEE, CSE, IT, AERO, CIVIL, BIO-TECH and MECH). Besides Engineering Mathematics, the Department handles advanced and specialized papers like Operations Research, Statistics for Management, Probability and Statistics, Probability and Queuing Theory, Random Processes and Discrete Mathematics.
The Department of Physics caters to the basic foundation course, Engineering Physics, a baseline for any engineering stream. Presently, the Department has six highly qualified and dedicated faculty members with specialization in various disciplines of Physics and 4 nonteaching staff. Of the 6-teaching staff, 2 hold Ph.D. degree in Physics and other staff members are pursuing their Doctoral degree. There are 2 research guides under whom scholars are registered for their Ph.D. degree. The areas of specialization of the faculty members are Nanomaterials, Crystal growth and characterization, NLO Studies, Spectroscopy and Thin films. To enrich the knowledge, faculties are motivated to attend Seminars, Conferences, and Faculty Development Programmes and publish their research findings.
The Department has a well-established laboratory to accommodate sixty students at a time. The faculty members of the Department visit various national laboratories frequently to update and enhance their knowledge to serve the social and student community. Laboratory equipments are available to meet the need for the curriculum framed by Anna University.
The Department of Chemistry with all its amenities and good infrastructure caters to the basic foundation course of B. E and B.Tech students. And the Department has highly qualified and dedicated faculty members with specialization in various fields of chemistry with rich experience. At present, the Department consists of 9 teaching staff and 4 non-teaching staff. Of them 4 are Ph.D. scholars in various area of specialization in chemistry, and other staff members are pursuing their Doctoral degree. All Ph.D. scholars are acting as research Guides. Our faculty members have published many papers in refereed journals which pay to their credentials. The Awards received by the Department enlightens the teaching efficiency of the faculties.
As a recognized Department of Anna University, the Department has a well-established laboratory which can accommodate seventy students at a time. A good number of sophisticated instruments form a part of the chemistry laboratory. The Laboratory also provides the equipments and instrumental facilities to carry out the research in various disciplines of Chemistry.
