Civil Engineering is the mother of all branches of Engineering. The principal educational objective of our department is to provide the students with fundamental knowledge and the skills needed to resolve the problems related to construction and maintenance of infrastructure in harmony with the society and environment.
   Department of Civil Engineering was introduced in the academic year 2009-2010 in Jeppiaar Engineering College with an intake of 58. Subsequently, the intake was increased to 78 in 2010-2011.In the year 2010-11 the students intake was 74 nos. The department has 12 qualified faculty members and 3 non teaching staff members. The department is equipped with fully established laboratories.
   A student chapter of Indian Concrete Institute (ICI), Chennai is started in the academic year 2009-10. The ICI students chapter of our department is regularly organizing seminars, guest lectures for the benefit of student community. Prominent experts from the academia and the Industry had given guest lectures to our students and shared their experiences. Also, Students are taken to industrial visits regularly during every semester. Some of the important locations visited by our students in the last three years are Jeppiaar Cements Private Limited at Ariyalur, Jeppiaar Steel Private Limited at Sriperumpudur, Jeppiaar Ready Mix concrete plant at Thalambur, Jeppiaar Fishing Harbour at Muttam, SERC at Taramani, Structural and Concrete and Highway labs at IIT Madras, Highway Research Station at Guindy and so on. The department encourages our students and also faculty members to participate in national and international workshops and conferences to update their skills in the latest areas through the full sponsorship of our management.
   We conducted a students seminar on “ Significance of Codal Provisions on Civil Engineering” on 24th Jan 2013 organized by our ICI Student Chapter. Dr. N.Gopalakrishnan , Senior Principal Scientist, SERC and Mr. Sakthivelan, Director (Projects), The AXIS Infrastructure Consultancy Ltd, Chennai presided over the function as chief guests and encouraged the students. Three prizes were given for the short listed students out of the eight students presented the seminars.
   Also, we inaugurated our first News bulletin from ICI students Chapter, Department of Civil Engineering, Jeppiaar Engineering College which includes the seminar abstracts.

PEO1: Our graduates will exhibit excellent proficiency in identifying analyzing, formulating and solving different civil engineering problems.
PEO2: Our Students will develop appropriate skills that will lead themforimmediate employment in the construction industry orpostgraduate study in Civil Engineering disciplines.
PEO3: Our students will develop a high level of aptitude and acumen in design, drafting and drawing various components of civil engineering.
PEO4: Our students will develop a broader understanding inmultidisciplinary areas connecting civil engineering and an ability to relate engineering issues to broader social and human requirement, in which their engineering contributions will be utilized.

Program Specific Outcomes (PSO)

PSO 1: An ability to understand the basic concepts in Civil Engineering and to apply them to various areas like Construction Planning, Drafting and Drawing, Sub Soil Investigation, Structural Analysis and Design, Construction Execution and Repair, Rehabilitation & Maintenance of Civil Infrastructure viz. Bridges, Dams, High rise Buildings, Roads & Special Structures.
PSO 2: An ability to solve complex Civil Engineering problems, using latest hardware and software tools & Equipment along with analytical skills to arrive cost effective and appropriate solutions.
PSO 3: An understanding of social-responsibility & environmental-friendliness along with ethical concern to have a fruitful career and to sustain passion and interest for innovations and advances in civil engineering using optimal and environmental friendly resources as an Entrepreneur.
